My Dad’s neighbour’s cat has huge clumps in it’s fur is this likely to be mange?

I visited my Dad & was appalled to see his neighbour’s cat who has many clumps of matted fur on her back. She’s a black medium length coat cat appx 18 yrs old. Neighbour claims she’s taken the cat to the vet but that the vet said it was mange and the cat needs her fur clipped but is too old to undergo the anaesthetic that would be needed to do this. I have severe doubts that the cat ever saw a vet & something about this doesn’t ring true – from what I’ve seen on the web, mange usually causes itching and hairloss, neither of which this cat has. To me she just looks like she needs a good grooming and her hair clipped professionally.
The cat in general is poorly treated in my opinion. She’s never allowed into the house except to eat and is left outside in all weathers. I had concerns about this cat previously but on seeing her tonight I am seriously considering making a formal report to the SSPCA. Any experts out there that can advise as to whether this does sound like mange?

Mange is normally a balding of the fur and very sore skin. Sounds to me like she needs a good brush and maybe a clipping, but if the owners are not going to maintain her coat it would probably be a waste of time.
Report the owners I would.

My dog has a big ugly nasty rash on his tummy and armpits, what could it be?

My puppy has some kind of skin irritation, it resembles a rash but not sure. He is going to the vet tomorrow to get it looked at but wondered if there was anything I could do to maybe help with the itching, and in case its some sort of fungal infection prevent it from spreading to me and my other dog. I’ve already isolated him to a single room away from the other dog, and I wash my hands and use germ-x after handling him. But the rash is red bumps with whitish yellow pustules all over, it itches (he keeps biting and licking it) and i think it might hurt because he’s fairly inactive. I gave him a doggy pain killer that i had left over from when he was injured a couple weeks ago and after that he played for about two hours and then went back to bed and has been laying there ever since (so I think it must hurt him). Any ideas about what it could be. I don’t believe it is mange because we already treated him like it was and it has continued to spread, and he isn’t losing any hair and it seems to be restricting itself to places where there is no hair present like the lower tummy near his genitals and his armpits.

It sounds like your dog has Puppy pyoderma or Puppy strangles.

Puppy pyoderma is a bacterial infection.
Lesions are like pimples in humans.
Red raised areas with white pus filled center.
In short haired dogs the coat looks to be covered in hives
Pyoderma is typically due to allergic skin reactions to fleas, ticks, fungus or yeast.
Abrasions develop on the skin surface as a result of scratching.
The areas that are affected are the thinly haired areas of the body like the tummy, arm pits and groin.

Antibiotics may be administered for 2-6 weeks.
A culture and sensitivity must be done to ensure the correct antibiotic is used to kill infection.
Beside antibiotics topical sprays can be used to help soothe skin.
Bathing the dog with benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine based shampoos can also be helpful to curb the discomfort and promote healing.

You pups immune system is being challanged so do you best to keep him comfortable and happy.
Follow all recommendations of your vet.
Give antibiotics exactly as prescribed and do not miss a dose!
The poor little guy he will be fine after antibiotics are completed.

Take Care!

Home remedy for mange for dog and human?

Ok something is wrong with the puppy that was given to me. He had a rough start at life and has some kinda skin condition. I’m starting to think it may be mange. I already took him to the vet and they were no help. Now his hairs falling out, he’s extremely itchy, and very crusty. To be honest with you I can’t afford another vet bill and my puppy needs help. And I don’t know if I’m paranoid or what but I’m starting to itch pretty bad so if you know something I can do for myself as well please let me know. Thank you!

I’m in the same situation. My English Bull Terrier has extremely dry, irritated skin. She’s started to lick at it so much, that she has bold spots. It’s quite sad :[

I’ve ruled out mange on my pup. Mange usually attacks the face and legs. It your pup’s skin problem is all over, it’s not mange.

Skin allergy tests are very expensive, and I’m in a tight spot this month so I understand that you can’t go to the vet.

I’m currently assuming my pup has a food allergy. Corn and wheat are the two ingredients that dogs are typically allergic to. At this point, it couldn’t hurt to change his food over.

Try Canidae Lamb & Rice kibble. It’s a more natural based dry food. If you do decide to change his food over, don’t give him anything else during the change. Once he’s completely on the new food, give it a week to two weeks and see if that helps.

If your dog is itchy all the time and fleas are ruled out, then he may be sensitive to either food, airborne allergens or both. Try and determine a pattern of when he does most of his scratching and chewing.

Does he scratch constantly or just after he eats or when he comes in from outside.

Does he just chew his feet which could indicate that food is the problem.

Does he shake his head alot and have constant reoccurring ear infections which could mean that “yeast” is a big problem.

Does he scoot on his behind often which could indicate that he has a gland problem which could be caused by either food or environmental allergens.

Does your old dog have soft stool more often than not, this is common in dogs with allergies.
Helpful Tips…

Keep your dog clean, including his ears, especially if he has a “yeast” problem.

If he is sensitive to to people food, don’t give it to him.

Stick to all natural forms of food.

“Benedryl” (Plain Benedryl Only) check with the pharmacist if you are uncertain as to which one is safe for dogs, they can help you. You will probably have to check with your veterinarian as to how much to give your dog.

Again, “Temeril P” which is a prescription medication and includes prednisolone and trimeprazine seems to work wonders for canine allergies. Keep in mind that all dogs are different and all drugs do have side effects, so please talk to your veterinarian about this medication in detail.
Watch your dog and try to identify timing patterns, etc. to determine what might be causing the constant dog chewing and nagging dog skin problems.

The First Place To Start Should Be With The Dog’s Food.

needless to say, I’ve done my research. I’m in the same boat so I completely understand what you’re going through

Good luck
Hope everything turn out well :)

Does my cat have mange?

A few days ago, my cat started acting differently. She became almost depressed but we figured this was because of her not being allowed in the house anymore (untrainable). But today we went outside and on her stomach, approximately 3.5 ins. in diameter, was a completely bald spot. I didn’t notice any scarring, scabs, bruising, or anything like that. Also, lower on her stomach was a 3 inch long and .75 inch wide strip of fur that was brownish. I have seen the same thing on cats when I bathe them, when the flea dirt gets wet so I am assuming it is blood. Could she have mange? Some of the things I have been reading make it seem like it is not mange. It is not on her ears. Her coat is fairly thick. BTW, she is a short-haired gray and white cat. Also, I have four other cats who have not shown any sign of anything different at all. They eat good, are extremely playful, and look very healthy. Also, if it is mange, what can I do to cure it and also keep my other cats from getting it? They are all outside cats. Only two of them are allowed to come inside but that is only for a short period of time. Any ideas what is wrong with Sidekick?

this don’t sound like mange, but justin casee keep the cat separate from ALL other animals , else it could spread.
there are a few thing what this could be,
depression
mange
pregnantt and is making a nest
absess
ticksirritationion to the skin.
the best thing to do would be to take your cat to the vet as soon as possibbeforefor it gets worse spreadseddon’tont forget to keep your cat separated.
hope your cat gets well soon
p,s -imaginegen that it is blood. try bathing it , then you can identifyafy it.

Hair Loss in Older Hamsters?

I have a 2 1/2 year old male Syrian hamster who is showing signs of hair loss on his back. Is this something that’s due to old age? He’s not scratching a lot so I’ve already ruled out parasites. (Fleas, mites, & mange) His father lived to be 3 1/2 years old and his mother lived to be 2 years old before they both died of old age but neither showed signs of hair loss before. Is there anything that I can do to prevent him from losing more of his hair?

Hello.
No, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to prevent, or slow down the loss of fur in an older hamster. This is just a part of the ageing process; the fur loss usually starts around the hips, and the hind legs, and may gradually progress over the entire body. Although there is normally no discomfort in this condition in the early stages, but some dry, and scaly skin may become more apparent later as it progresses. Some irritation (scratching) may be noticed; this may be helped, or relived by putting a few drops of cod liver oil on his food. I usually put it on their favorite treat, or straight from a dropper into his mouth, and then I know they have taken it. Cod liver oil contains naturally high doses of Vitamin D, and is the best source of this vitamin. But as this is a fat soluble Vitamin, he can overdose on it. Only give him about 2 drops for three or four days, and then decrease it to once a week. This should help with the dry skin if it should appear.

Flea and Mange treatment?

Can you use old motor oil to get rid of fleas and mange on your dog?
I know this is silly, I am being asked to ask this question.
Please no smart remarks. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

No, you can not. It won’t do anything about the fleas or the mange, and it will harm your dog.

Is there some reason why the dog owner won’t go to the vet?

Cat has mange!!?

I think my cat has a spot of mange. Does anyone know a home remedy for this, please.

Thank you

OK, I was told a dog had it years ago and took a chance and adopted her anyway. I cleared it up–Use Hydrocortisone cream 4 times a day and if you can get a bit of teatree oil one teaspoon mixed with 1/4 cup olive oil dab it on in between hydrocortisone cream . Target sells teatree oil and otehr stores surely have it. Online as well.
Then if that does not work within a week (seeing progress) got to vet.
