sulphur treatment for dog mange?

i was adviced to use a pinch of sulphur with milk to cure dog mange ……i have seen improvement in my dog ,growth of hair, reduced scratching..but am unsure of the dose and how long to continue…any ideas?
vet has prescribed half of 12 mg ivermectin for six weeks (because its a young dog) and 3 days dose of avil…..which treatment should i follow?
she has small pink boils so i think its Sarcoptic mange

Our shepherd is just coming to the end of treatment.

I used Omega Oil capsules (1000 mg), 400 iu Vitamin E, selenium and 50 mg Zinc in her food. I was also using an antibacterial shampoo twice a week. I found a drop of grapefruit seed extract in each handful of shampoo was great too – its a really powerful antibacterial/antiviral/antimicrobial agent so use with care!

Homeopathically I was giving her sulphur, graphite and silicea tabs (30X) twice a day, for seven days only, break of 3 days, then another dose for a week.

I think a combination of all this really helped her. You have to be patient – its a long, slow cure unfortunately. Please check with your vet before trying out any of the above just to make sure they will be safe and suitable for your pet. Best of luck.

What’s the incubation period for sarcoptic mange? How long would it take to show symptoms?

I’m having a dispute over who is resonsible for this vet bill. There’s no way he got that any place else but the shelter.
Please cite a source if possible so I can complete further research for my nasty letter.
The dog was placed with us 3 weeks before the adoption, and 3.5 weeks before the diagnosis.

That’s kind of a hard question to answer, {{{Mozz}}} as the reaction can be individual. As a rule, it takes two weeks for the mites to complete a lifecycle. This is usually when the animal starts to show major symptoms, up till then it can look like simple dry flaky skin. If it’s a full blown case, the dog has probably had it for at least two weeks.

My Dad’s neighbour’s cat has huge clumps in it’s fur is this likely to be mange?

I visited my Dad & was appalled to see his neighbour’s cat who has many clumps of matted fur on her back. She’s a black medium length coat cat appx 18 yrs old. Neighbour claims she’s taken the cat to the vet but that the vet said it was mange and the cat needs her fur clipped but is too old to undergo the anaesthetic that would be needed to do this. I have severe doubts that the cat ever saw a vet & something about this doesn’t ring true – from what I’ve seen on the web, mange usually causes itching and hairloss, neither of which this cat has. To me she just looks like she needs a good grooming and her hair clipped professionally.
The cat in general is poorly treated in my opinion. She’s never allowed into the house except to eat and is left outside in all weathers. I had concerns about this cat previously but on seeing her tonight I am seriously considering making a formal report to the SSPCA. Any experts out there that can advise as to whether this does sound like mange?

Mange is normally a balding of the fur and very sore skin. Sounds to me like she needs a good brush and maybe a clipping, but if the owners are not going to maintain her coat it would probably be a waste of time.
Report the owners I would.

My dog is itchy but its not fles… Help?

My dog has had this problem before. His face and his eyes start to scab up, hes all ways licking his paws and his back is supper sensitive to ich. When you scratch it gets moist and oily. To solve this in the past we just gave him fish oil and it did the trick. Now its just bairly preventing it from getting worse. Any idea? It might be mange but im not sure… i know your going to tell me go to a vet… Im not asking if i should take him i all ready know and i am… im asking if you know what it is.

Itching is caused by many things. Fleas, dry skin, mange, allergies.

The vet will be able to help you figure out what it is. We on the net would just be guessing.

home remedies for mange on dog?

Now, first: what does mange look like on dogs? second: any home remedy ideas? My dog is shedding horribly and you can pull her fur out in clumps. She is not itching badly or anything, but she has “dandruff” all over her. I don’t know what to do. I found a “remedy” using borax and peroxide but i dont want to use it if anyone has any better ideas. I just dont want to take the risk of harming her… She loves baths and all so that wouldnt be a problem… any ideas anyone? PLEASE HELP

first: search google, it depends on what type of mange your dog has.
second: i’ve heard home remedies don’t work. you could possibly call your vet and ask if it works. if not, take it into a vet and have them prescribe her something.

My dog has a big ugly nasty rash on his tummy and armpits, what could it be?

My puppy has some kind of skin irritation, it resembles a rash but not sure. He is going to the vet tomorrow to get it looked at but wondered if there was anything I could do to maybe help with the itching, and in case its some sort of fungal infection prevent it from spreading to me and my other dog. I’ve already isolated him to a single room away from the other dog, and I wash my hands and use germ-x after handling him. But the rash is red bumps with whitish yellow pustules all over, it itches (he keeps biting and licking it) and i think it might hurt because he’s fairly inactive. I gave him a doggy pain killer that i had left over from when he was injured a couple weeks ago and after that he played for about two hours and then went back to bed and has been laying there ever since (so I think it must hurt him). Any ideas about what it could be. I don’t believe it is mange because we already treated him like it was and it has continued to spread, and he isn’t losing any hair and it seems to be restricting itself to places where there is no hair present like the lower tummy near his genitals and his armpits.

It sounds like your dog has Puppy pyoderma or Puppy strangles.

Puppy pyoderma is a bacterial infection.
Lesions are like pimples in humans.
Red raised areas with white pus filled center.
In short haired dogs the coat looks to be covered in hives
Pyoderma is typically due to allergic skin reactions to fleas, ticks, fungus or yeast.
Abrasions develop on the skin surface as a result of scratching.
The areas that are affected are the thinly haired areas of the body like the tummy, arm pits and groin.

Antibiotics may be administered for 2-6 weeks.
A culture and sensitivity must be done to ensure the correct antibiotic is used to kill infection.
Beside antibiotics topical sprays can be used to help soothe skin.
Bathing the dog with benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine based shampoos can also be helpful to curb the discomfort and promote healing.

You pups immune system is being challanged so do you best to keep him comfortable and happy.
Follow all recommendations of your vet.
Give antibiotics exactly as prescribed and do not miss a dose!
The poor little guy he will be fine after antibiotics are completed.

Take Care!

Dog in need of help !!!!!!!!!!!?

My dog has allergy’s is scratching uncontrollably at his skin and some of his hair is falling off. We have already taken him to the vet and they said that it was in fact allergy’s and not mange or another condition. I wanted to know if anyone knew any home remedies to prevent the itching. Thank you much!

You can’t fix the itching without discovering what he’s allergic to and eliminating it. I’d start with the food, since that is often the issue. Look for a grain-free product and switch him to it (slowly so he doesn’t get an upset stomach). Brands to check into would be Wellness Core, Innova Evo, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance (one of their allergy fomulas), and Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. Or, if you’re committed, a raw prey-model diet would be better than any prepared one for allergies (but you will need to do a lot of research to make sure your dog is getting a complete diet first).
