Why are mange and skin allergies very prevalent in dogs nowadays?

I had taken care of so many dogs, street breeds,no pedigrees before, all had healthy coats regardless of the food they consumed but the same breeds today are very sensitive to mites and allergies.I had observed those with white coats are most vulnerable, those with mixed coat colors, the white portions seem to be the first to manifest symptoms.

I think it has a lot to do with how poorly bred many of these animals are today. You never see pups from a good breeder get mange, but most of the byb dogs I pull into rescue and most of the pet store dogs I see have some mange.
When the mother is not cared for properly and the owner has no care for good nutrition through the pregnancy, then comes on Yahoo Answers the day of whelping to ask stupid questions, you know there are going to be immune deficiencies, among other health issues.

Years ago I never even heard of Demodex mange, now I see it in just about every rescue dog we have. My newest puppy foster just started losing hair and is scheduled for a trip to the vet now, and his breeder fed the mom donuts the whole time she was pregnant.

Edit: Wow, what a coincidence. The pup of the mother I mentioned above has just been diagnosed with Demodex.

How long is sarcoptic (scabies) mange contagious for after treatment has begun?

Can’t seem to find an answer to this on the net. Any idea? 3 weeks? 30 days??

I would consider it contagious until the treatment is over. At the shelter we work in, we usually treat the dogs for 6 weeks and then perform another skin scraping to make sure that it is negative.

Is there a good home treatment for dog mange without going to a vet?

Mange is a very serious situation. There are two kinds: sarcoptic, which is very contagious, but easy to cure, and demodectic, which is not contagious, but takes a long time to cure. First, a vet needs to do a scraping to find out which kind of mange it is so it can be treated correctly. A shot of Ivomec, followed by another shot or two will clear it up in two or three weeks. They also should have regular baths with a special shampoo, which you can do after the vet has seen your pet. If you want a pet, you must be prepared to make sacrifices when he becomes ill. However, if you talk to your vet and say that you want to cooperate, he will tell you how to do the baths. Also, if you are willing to learn to give shots, some agricultural stores will sell you the Ivomec and show you how to do it. But be sure to give your dog the best possible treatment possible. He deserves it.

Due to major illnes of family member, I am very short of spendable cash. My dog was seen by vet and has this type of mange. I purchased first bottle of medicine, but he needs more treatment and medicine is expensive. The ONLY active ingredient is sulpher so I am hoping someone may know of a tried and true home remedy that might work. Thank You in advance.

Ivomec. Can buy it at a farm supply store. Also treats and prevents heart worms.

Can a dog catch the mange, by walking around where the once contaminated dog was?

Someone put a dog with the mange in my backyard. I had the dog removed but now I’m afraid to let my dogs out. I don’t want to take the chance of them catching it also. Is there something I can spray or dust my yard with to prevent any chance of my dogs catching it or something I can give my dogs as a precaution. I have a shar pei and a chihuahua. Both dogs stay indoors and until the back yard is safe their outdoor time is very limited and on leash.

If the dog had demodex….then no. That’s a hereditary ‘mange.’ It’s not contagious at all. (Your dogs already have a few of those mites on them…all dogs do. It’s a genetic defect passed on through inappropriate breeding that allows them to propagate and cause skin disease.)

If the dog had scabies (sarcoptic mange)….then YES, other dogs can indeed pick it up out of the environment, although that’s not as common as direct contact. Revolution is quite effective at treating/preventing it. It’s a prescription product available from your DVM. Your dogs must be current on their annual heartworm tests before it can be dispensed. We used to have a good yard spray/powder available, but it was taken off the market.

Did you get it confirmed that it was one or the other type of ‘mange’? The reason I ask is that many times dogs have severe allergies, seborrhea, etc. that people are convinced is the ‘mange’….when it’s not at all. Ringworm (a skin fungus) can also appear to look like ‘mange’…and it’s contagious to other animals as well (to humans, too.)

If you have any other questions, you really should call your own veterinarian and discuss the situation. Knowing your dogs, he/she is in the best position to advise you.

Glad to hear that they’re indoor dogs, and that you’ve taken steps to make sure that their outdoor time is safe. :-)

Please NOTE: The ONLY heartworm preventative (in the U.S.) that also treats scabies is Revolution. Heartguard, Interceptor, and Sentinel do not. Neither do the other monthly flea medications (Advantage, Advantix, Frontline.) The active *ingredient* in Heartguard does actually treat scabies…but only at a dose of 100 times the dose in the heartworm preventative package. I sure wish people would only post about things they KNOW, rather than spreading false information. *sigh*
