Mange Medicine
Mange medicine or mange treatment products for sarcoptic mange, demodectic mange and other parasite afflictions in dogs and cats vary widely from garlic regimens to highly toxic and highly reported side effect treatments like Amitraz or Ivermectin. Beware of toxic mange medicine commonly prescribed to your pets.
Mange medicines making claims to actually kill sarcoptic mites on dogs and cats fall under the watch of the EPA not the FDA. Mange medicine products making kill claims must have EPA approved ingredients (this is a rather short list), be registered with the EPA or go through extensive and expensive clinical trials to be registered. The EPA has really cracked down on companies selling mange medicine products in the last couple of years that have been making mite kill claims.
Other mange medicines, regardless of whether they effectively kill sarcoptic mange, demodectic mange mites or not, are only allowed to make claims treating the symptoms of sarcoptic mange or demodectic mange unless they are a 25(b) exempt product. In other words exempt mange medicines contain ingredients on the EPA’s 25(b) exempt list of ingredients. This is the reason you may see ambiguous wording on many products. It’s there for a reason. This definitely creates confusion for the consumer on selecting the most effective mange medicine.
While many ineffective mange medicine products are barred from entry, which is a good thing, there is a wide gap between toxic registered mange medicine products, which wouldn’t be allowed by the FDA on people and natural mange medicine products like listed essential oils. Many essential oils are proven to be effective on parasites but only at very high levels. These high levels are also proven to have side effects to people and are their percentages are controlled.
An example of confusing mange medicine products is ProMeris, which is EPA registered to kill fleas and ticks but is widely promoted via non-manufacturer websites to also kill sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange mites. The actives in ProMeris are metaflumizone, a flea control and Amitraz, a tick control. These sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange mite kill claims may or may not be true but it does have many reported serious side effect reports to both pets and people.
Research shows all dogs have sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange mites and that many dog breeds are predisposed to acquiring mange outbreaks. It is also believed that demodectic mange is linked to an immune deficiency in the animal. There are many nontraditional and homeopathic mange medicine treatments that are available including immune bolstering supplements. Non-toxic mange medicines like shampoos and medicated washes disinfect the mange ravaged areas allowing the healing of sores.
