Flaca’s story 2

“Flaca”, (which means “skinny”) was brought to Lighthouse by a woman who found her on the streets. She had been abandoned, in town, by an uncaring owner. Flaca was within two or three days of death. At Lighthouse she was given antibiotics, de-wormer, vitamins, and sub-cutaneous fluids and the woman was instructed to bring her back every week for treatments for her numerous infections, mange, parasites, etc. The woman elected to do it herself at her home with homemade remedies. After about six months Flaca was brought back to Lighthouse. She had gained weight and was back on her feet. Although her health had improved, she still had a long way to go. She thrived at Lighthouse and started healing more rapidly. She is now a very cherished member of her adoptive family. They adore her. This is what rescue is all about.

my pug had a litter of 8 puppies some are small and some are about twice their size is this normal?

my pug had 8 puppies but 5 died a breeder told me that they didn’t get the needed vitamins that come out before the milk starts comeing out he said the three that lived probaly got on the tit and stayed on preventing the others from being able to ,and now they are almost a week old and two of these are a lot bigger than the other one is this normal? the mother seems to favor the smallest one?is she makeing sure it is getting plenty of food?she likes to carry it around.also the mother is scratching and biteing herself raw in spots and it is very nasty looking and her ears have gotten real nasty looking and she is scratching them to sores.is this a case of ear mites and mange?if so how do i treat it i tried vegetable oil and then alcohol ,what other safe remedies are there?i would appreciate some helpful advice.

OH Please do NOT put alcohol on a sore! Imagine how bad that must hurt!
First I am assuming that this was a mating of 2 healthy dogs of breeding quality, So we can rule out genetic defects causing the high mortality rate & the disproportionate size, that being said,You really need to take Mom & Puppies to a vet. you could end up losing ALL the pups AS WELL AS THE MOM. Puppies that young are suseptible to all kinds of infection & disease & do NOT have the strenght to fight it off. They should have been checked between days 3 & 5 anyway. And a nursing mom showing signs of illness needs to be seen by a vet not only for her own health but for the health of the puppies as well. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make an appointment right away. Non of these dogs asked for this…it was a decision you made for them so you should help them through it in every way possible.

Mange treatment?

My neighbor’s dog seems to have mange, and I don’t think the vet would let me bring him in since he isn’t my pet, I don’t know what to do, I feel so bad for him and all the medications I can find are like medicines.. Is there an easy homemade solution I can give him? His owner ignores the fact that he has mange though it’s easy to see, they just have so many pets.

There are no effective home remedies for Mange. There are also different kinds and different cures to match. The best thing is to make an anonymous call to the ASPCA in your area. They will deal with the owner by educating him/her and making him/her take the dog to the vet for treatment. If the owner does not do as the ASPCA ask, they can take the dog away.
For your own sake, say nothing more to the owner. After the ASPCA visits him – if the dog does not improve in 4 weeks, call them again.

need help with my dog’s symptoms of illness.?

She is a lab/rot mix and recently started acting lazy and tired. She also is losing patches of hair on her chest and she also has a patch missing on the top of her neck that looks like an open sore. She is usually very active running everywhere hunting and playing. I don’t want the expenses of going to the vet, but I wondered if anyone knew what she might have and how I could treat her over the counter. I will take her to the vet if need be, but looking for alternative. Closes thing I could find for her symptoms was mange. We lost a cat 1 year ago to these same kind of symptoms because we just asumed he had gotten in a fight with another animal, but now that my dog is showing the same symptoms, I don’t want to lose her too. Thanks

Mange can cause hair loss, but usually not lethargic behavior. Other alternatives might be Lyme Disease (carried by ticks), heartworms, distemper, or intestinal parasites. These are just a few I could come up with- the sypmtoms you are describing could be ascribed to many different illnesses.

I think this is a serious enough condition that a visit to the vet is in order. Explain your financial situation to the vet, and I’m sure they will do the best they can to work within your budget. No one likes to talk about money when it comes to caring for a loved member of the family, but it is a practical issue that no doubt the vet has helped clients with before. They can help you narrow down the possibilities based on the dog’s vaccination and behavior history, and diseases/parasites that are common in your area.

Knowing what is causing the dog’s symptoms will actually save you money in the long run, becuase you’re not wasting money on over-the-counter remedies that were cures for a disease the dog didn’t actually have. (Example: buying a mange treatment when the dog actually has ringworm would be useless).

Is mange in cats treated thesame as in dogs? is there a home remedy?

I donot have much money (& I am not asking for any!)
He is maybe 1month couple weeks old,&has been Licking non stop, his legs and stomach are hairless and flaky from the constant lick. My Vet visit it tomarrow, I do hope its cheap for I only have the consult money but if the treament is over $50.00 dollars We should be fine.

mange in cats is extremely rare, it’s doubtful to be that. (it starts at the ears or top of the head most of the time.) maybe allergies? many cats have them (to all sorts of things from flea bites to food ingredients to pollens) and itchiness & licking/fur pulling are common symptoms of it.

if it looks like it be an expensive treatment once the vet diagnosis something, don’t be too shy to ask if there is anything that can be done at home or if there is a human equivalent instead. he wants your kitty to get better too and will do what he can to help you do that, esp if a cheaper treatment is available.
