How do I know if my pet has mange?
The only successful test for mange mites proven effective is a skin scraping. Your veterinarian can perform this simple test for you. This test consists of the top layers of skin being scrapped from the animal’s body and examined under a microscope for the presence of mange mites in the skin.
Although this test can be painful and sometimes cause bleeding, it is an effective way to determine if your pet has mange. Some symptoms of mange are red bumps, itchiness, soreness, redness and hair loss. One way you may tell if your pet has sarcoptic mange is if your other pets have mange as well. Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious and can pass from pet to pet by direct contact. If you are dealing with sarcoptic mange you need to keep the infected animal quarantine because it is highly contagious. If your pet is less than one year old you may be dealing with demodectic mange. Demodectic mange is inherited from the mother and is not contagious to other pets in your home. Our mange treatment product would be effective against both demo and sarcoptic mange. They are all completely safe and non-toxic. The products offered for mange are the PetsBestRx Mitactin Spray and PetsBestRx Sulfinex Cream. If your pet has a septic smell you need to treat first with the PetsBestRx Pet Wash and wash your pet one time per day for five days or until the smell is gone. After the Pet Wash treatment, you can spray the Mitactin Spray very lightly to just the affected areas. Spraying too much product can irritate the skin. On the following day, apply the Sulfinex Cream to just the affected area. You would alternate these products every other day. You should be able to tell when you pet is getting better. You usually will see signs of improvement in as early as the first 48 hours.
