Are Ivermectin and Mitaban harmful to my pet?
Yes. Ivermectin is a broad spectrum anti-parasitic medication generally used as a food supplement for horses and other animals. Although it is licensed for use in dogs and cats as a heartworm preventative, it is NOT an FDA approved treatment for mange. In small doses Ivermectin has practically no side effects, however, in the dosages recommended to treat mange it can cause extreme health issues.
Breeds particularly having problems with large doses of Ivermectin include but are not limited to Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Shepards, Old English Sheepdogs and other herding breeds.
The Mitaban dips use an active ingredient called Amitraz. The mechanism of action for Amitraz is currently unknown, but the most current data suggests it attacks the central nervous system of the animal. Mitaban treatments last 2 to 3 months with dips every two weeks. Mitaban dips only have a 60% success rate and in some cases, when not successful, animals are given up to 5 times the recommended dose with only an 85% success rate. These excessive dosages of Mitaban dips have been known to result in respiratory failure, cancer and general immune system failure. These treatments are extremely risky and harmful to health of your pet.
Ivermectin can be harmful to your pet because it mimics your pet’s immune system. Taking a pet completely off of this medication can cause your pet’s already low immune system to suppress further. We suggest if your pet is on Ivermectin that you keep them on the Ivermectin when you start our mange treatment and slowly wean them off of this medication. Our PetsBestRx Mighty Vites can be used to boost your pet’s immune system while treating for mange. Your cat or dog will love to take them.
